According to the definition by American Psychological Association, Schizophrenia is a serious mental illness characterized by incoherent or illogical thoughts, bizarre behaviour and speech, and delusions or hallucinations, such as hearing voices. Schizophrenia typically begins in early adulthood. Many famous personalities like Vincent Van Gogh, John Nash, Mary Todd Lincoln were supposed to be schizophrenic. Many schizophrenics have attempted to depict their afflictions on canvas. Let us have a look at their works:

Vincent Van Gogh was a dutch painter who got much acclaim after his suicide. His art is much celebrated and famous all over the world. His style is supposed to be much influenced by his mental illness. He had drawn several self- portraits which portrays himself staring directly at the viewer. 2. Charles Steffen

Charles Steffen was an American artist famous for his weird nude paintings. He underwent electric shock therapy for schizophrenia for a period of 11 years. Steffen was a self-taught artist and painted for his own pleasure. He used his nickname “chas” in his paintings. On one of his paintings he had written "I'm an art school drop out stoped going to classes, became mentally ill, spent foreteen years in elgin state hos, made crayon drawing of the men on the ward, good, small, nice, I wish I had them, I wish I was dead, chas.”
